This is my swimming pool pump set up. When I bought my house this equipment was very old probably closer to 20 years old. Everything was shot, the chlorinator, the swimming pool pump, the multi flow valve on the pool filter.
I needed to get my swimming pool pump replaced and so I looked around to see who could do it. I found a mobile service called Warm Springs Pool and Spa repairs.
Warren from Warm Springs was able to source a high quality Austral Pump for me. He recommended going for a larger size so that the pool would be filtered more effectively.
Since installing my new pump my pool pump has run trouble free and my pool is sparkling.
What does a swimming pool pump do?
An average swimming pool has a volume from as little as 10,000L but an average pool has a volume between 40,000 and 80,000L.
Your pool pump uses an impeller to draw water from your pool and move it through your filtration system. Your swimming pool filter is often either a sand filter or a cartridge filter. The pump works by drawing water through your filter and then the cartridge or sand traps leaves, debris and other small particles thus preventing them from returning to your pool.
If you have a salt water chlorinated pool the pump will then send the water through your chlorinator. The chlorinator uses electricity to react with the salt and water of the pool to produce hypochlorous acid (HCIO), and sodium hypochlorite (NaClO). These chemical kill any bugs or bacteria in your pool water.
In an ideal scenario you want your pool water to be circulated through the filter twice per day to ensure correct filtration. Talk to your pool repairer about this. You will need to get a swimming pool pump that is powerful enough to draw your entire pool volume through the filter twice per day in a 6 to 8 hour period.
How do I know if my pool pump needs repair?
The best way is to observe and listen to your pump. Firstly your pump should not leak. Look for any signs that your pump is losing water like wet sand around the base of the pump. Also look at your water quality. If you feel your water is not staying crystal clear then your pump may not be drawing enough water through the system.
Listen to your pump and try and get an idea of what a healthy pump sounds like. This way, if your pump starts to make unusual noises then you will be able to detect this.
At the first sign of trouble call your local swimming pool pump service technician. If left too long a small issue can lead to your pump needing a full replacement.
If I looked inside a swimming pool pump what would I find?
A pool pump is responsible for making sure that the water is pumped out of the pool and through the filter and then back into the pool. This helps to make sure that your pool water stays clean. A pump should filter all the water in your pool at least two times each day. You may be wondering what your pool pump has inside of it however. Here are some of the things you could expect to find inside if you took your pool pump apart.
Motor and Impeller
One of the first things you would notice is the motor and Impeller. The job of the motor/impeller is suck the water from the pool and then push it back out the other side and return it to the pool. The motor size and how much it can pump will be determined by the model of the pump. If this part of your pump is not working then you will find that your water will not be filtering like it should.
Seals
There are also seals inside your pump. The job of these seals is to make sure that the water doesn't not leak out as it makes its way through the pump. If a seal goes bad and you know what you are doing this is a fix that can easily be handled. You will likely know that you have a bad seal if you start to see water leaking from anywhere on your pump.
Wiring
You will find wiring inside your pump as well. The wiring helps to connect the motor to the source of power. So there is wiring from the plug to the motor and any other components of the pump that need it. If you have a digital pump there will need to be wiring to give this component power so that it will display any information that you need to know about how the pump is functioning.
Skimmer Basket
You may find a basket inside the pump as well. Most pumps that you find will have the skimmer part of the system built right into it. You should see a clear cap that you could unscrew to remove the basket so you can empty and replace it. This is important to understand. If you have a basket on your pump you need to make sure you are emptying it as that type of filter calls for. If you let the filter get too dirty you will find that the pump is no longer serving too much of a purpose because while it may be circulating some water the flow will be insufficient. One way to tell that it is time to replace your filter is to look at how much water is being pumped back into the pull. If you notice that it has drastically decreased then you will know it is likely because it is having a harder time moving through a clogged filter.
These are the things that you should see if you were to take your pump apart. It is always recommended that you seek professional help if you have a pump that has stopped working and you are not sure how to fix it. Remember if you do try to tackle the tasks on your own you need to make sure you are careful and that you unplug the pump from any source of power so that there is no chance of it turning on and shocking or injuring you in the process of you trying to fix it. Pool pumps may seem like they are simple mechanical objects but it is always best to get the help of a professional when you can.
Happy swimming in Perth this summer!
